So Kristal Thomas and I were walking down the steps of my dorm when I realized something i've never known about myself before as I spotted a trail of muddy shoe prints sprinkling down the hall: I LOVE TRACKS! No, not train tracks or anything of that nature. But true Agatha-Christie-Style tracks! Whether they be made by shoes, animal hooves, bread crumbs (in true hansel -and-gretel-style), or Gummy Worms, I love a good trail of almost anything to follow!
Kristal watched me with a look of what I believe was utter disbelief in my age as my eyes became big as saucers and I pointed down to the mud-soiled carpet and squealed in delight. Of course, I had to follow the foot prints (which in my mind were now all some big clue to some big case I was determined to solve in the near future) and when i did, they led dissapointingly to the back door of my dormitory.....and not to a sloppily hidden dead body or a pile of hidden treasure. It seemed instead of someone being in on a big heist and forgetting to wipe the bottom of their shoes as they tried to discard their evidence, someone had simply forgotten to wipe the bottom of their shoes after they had come in from walking outside. Grrrr.
There went all the exciting things I had already began to get exicted about! No tan-colored cloak, pipe, and magnifying glass. No talking Great Dane and at no point in my near future would I be allowed to shout "Jenkies!" without being frowned upon. Nope, my days as a private eye were over just as soon as they had started.
So Kristal and I went on to lunch that day and I tried to put the tracks in the back of my mind.....
Until I saw them again.
I happened to be walking alongside my friend Paislie when I noticed them again.
"Do you wonder where these foot prints lead to?" I asked her, curious to know if I was the only one who heard theme music any time a trail was spotted.
She shrugged and looked at them for a second, "Probably to that door back there" she answered simply.
I became annoyed "You mean to tell me that's the best you can come up with!? What if they lead to a million dollars lying on the ground or a dead body?" I whined
"Why would a million dollars be lying-"
"THAT'S NOT THE POINT!"
Paislie shurgged and took another look at the foot prints...and I watched as thoughts began to play over in her mind. It was happening! She was hearing that theme music now and she was wishing she had a cloak, pipe, and magnifying glass! I was not alone!
"I guess it could lead to a dead body. Murderers usually wear dirty shoes" she suggested "Or they can come from a guy that walked up these stairs from the back door to stalk someone"
"Exactly!" I said, excited to have a sidekick!
She bent down and ran her fingers across one of the prints, her forehead wrinkling as she observed the mud crack under the pressure of he touch
"They've been here for a while. The stalker could have killed the girl already!" she discovered
I gasped "He's probably already halfway to mexico by now!"
She gasped in horror "Oh my god! Let's follow them! Let's see where they go!" She pleaded.
I shook my head as I watched Paislie take off down the hall, her eyes on the tracks "My goodness, Paislie!" I said " They only lead to the back door! You have such an imagination!"
"But I-"
"You're so weird! I'm going to go do my work"
With that, I left Paislie and headed for the lobby of our dorm, satisfied in knowing that I was not the only one who could be transformed into a private eye at the sight of a trail. Paislie is my evidence that there is a detective in all of us.....all it takes is a day old trail of foot prints and a crazy friend to help bring it out!
***NOTICE****- Paislie nor her self esteem were harmed in the writing of this blog entry. She is still weird and she is STILL my friend.
