I was sitting in my dorm room, sun bathing through my open window on a sunny day, when- after bunches of thinking and ramen noodles- I made what could perhaps be the biggest decision of my life! I made the decision that I am- from now on and forever more- an IPhone person.
See, I got my first IPhone about two weeks ago after a sudden urge to upgrade from my old dinosaur of a phone. Surprisingly, before I walked into the AT&T store that day, I was an anti-IPhone person. I thought IPhone owners all had a smug air about them when it came to their cellular devices. It was like a cult! They all banded together over apps and consoled one another when the phone was dropped on the ground. I didn’t understand it, so of course- I hated it!
However, my hatred for the IPhone quickly wavered as soon as I was told by a salesman named Kevin that I was eligible to buy my very own. I couldn’t believe it! Me, the newest member of the cult I had once hated with such intensity that I had once even muted someone on twitter for a week because they wouldn’t stop talking about theirs.
I bought the phone and any accessories the store offered and took it home like a brand new baby anything. I locked myself in my room and tinkered with it for a while, pressing buttons (well, pressing screens. It only has one true button) and listening to the generic ring tones with a blatant feeling of happiness im almost embarrassed to admit was brought to me by a phone!
When my IPhone was a week old ( I resisted the urge to throw it a birthday party) I named it, like I do most things I love…even things I like a little. Her name was IYella and she was officially the center of my world. I talked to her, I played games with her, I loved her. My significant other became jealous of her, often hiding her under pillows and purposely putting in the wrong passcode to open her so that she’d shut down for 15 minutes. There came a time when seeing me without her was as shocking as seeing a ghost. It was officially… I was a part of the IPhone cult. In fact, I was quickly becoming the president of the Georgia chapter.
I wrote this not only to glorify my phone (even though its pretty awesome), but I instead wrote this as a love letter to the new love of my life. When IYella is old and her home button starts to stick and her screen starts to scratch, there will be more after her. There will be an IPhone 20 and I’ll probably wait in line to get it the very day it comes out. But I will never forget my first.
Aside from a thirty minute freeze I had to go to Google to figure out how to fix, IYella and I have not had any problems. In fact, I’ve since fallen deeper in love with her since I’ve downloaded a few more apps. This, has been a love story…and no, im not at all embarrassed that I am in love with my phone. In fact, im proud. And that’s my story of how sunbathing in a window….and a salesman named Kevin….led me to the love of my life.
